R. Kelly, the R&B singer, has been scheduled for release from prison on December 21, 2045, when he will be 78 years old.
Currently 57 years old, Kelly is serving a lengthy sentence for his convictions on child pornography and enticement charges.
A federal appeals court recently upheld Kelly’s convictions, rejecting his claims that the statute of limitations had expired.
The court stated that “for years, Robert Sylvester Kelly abused underage girls” and that “by employing a complex scheme to keep victims quiet, he long evaded consequences.
“Kelly was found guilty by a Chicago jury in 2022 on three child pornography-related counts and three child enticement charges, stemming from his abuse of his 14-year-old goddaughter “Jane” and other minors in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
He was previously sentenced to 30 years in prison following convictions in a separate federal case in New York.
While the singer was acquitted on seven other counts, including a fourth child pornography charge, the appeals court affirmed his convictions, stating that “an even-handed jury found Kelly guilty, acquitting him on several charges even after viewing those abhorrent tapes.
“The court also rejected Kelly’s arguments that the statute of limitations should excuse him from liability and that his sentence was improper.
R Kelly is currently being held at a medium security prison in North Carolina, with a scheduled release date of December 21, 2045.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences faced by those who abuse and exploit minors, even decades after their crimes.
