It is recently reported that the University of Cape Coast Governing Council had terminated the appointment of Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong as Vice-Chancellor.
Prof. Boampong was appointed for a four-year tenure in June 2020, and his period lapsed on July 31, 2024.
Even as there emerged an allegedly signed two-year appointment extension, the governing council declared it null and void.
What was clear, according to a notice signed by the Chairman of UCC’s Governing Council, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, was that while the appointment of Prof. Boampong was eligible for extension, no such decision had been taken.
It stated that the extension did not relate to the position of Vice-Chancellor but only applied to his membership of the University in general.
an official document from UCC says
The Statutes of the University prescribed a limit for the Vice-Chancellor, and that council nullified the purported renewal.
That means Prof. Boampong should apply for an extension if he intends to serve in his role further.
Well, it is in regard to the University of Cape Coast at the very center of this fray, importantly spelling out the intricacies of academic leadership and institutional governance
It places us face to face with the realization of the real role of university leadership in the making of responsible citizenship.
Professors like Boampong are core agents in cultural transmission, political socialization, and moral development.
Indeed, decisions taken by professors affect not only the university community but even society at large.
Since most of the time, these are determined by the capitalist system, special scrutiny needs to be placed upon its consequences
This brings me to the conclusion that the revocation of the appointment of Prof. Boampong simply reminds academic institutions not to let administration undermine their commitment towards raising responsible citizens.
