The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in Ghana has declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a suspect in four major corruption investigations, including those concerning the National Cathedral project and Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML).

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng stated on Wednesday, February 12th, that Ofori-Atta is now a wanted person and must return to Ghana for questioning. Agyebeng threatened to compel his return if he fails to cooperate, dismissing claims of medical travel as a delaying tactic.

He also denied that the OSP raided Ofori-Atta’s residence, suggesting instead that the former minister staged the event to discredit the investigation.

The cases involve contractual arrangements between SML and the GRA, the termination of a contract between ECG and Beijing Technology (BXC), procurement related to the National Cathedral, and a contract for ambulances awarded by the Ministry of Health.

According to Agyebeng, Ofori-Atta, who served as Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024, left Ghana around January 2nd, 2025, and was informed on January 24th, 2025, that the OSP considered him a suspect.

Ofori-Atta failed to appear for a scheduled interview on February 10th, citing indefinite medical leave. The OSP views this action as a significant step in combating corruption and ensuring accountability among public officials.
