The University of Ghana has responded to a recent claim by Joynews that the University has collected Ghc11 million in graduation fees whereas promised items undelivered to graduands
According to Dr. Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah (Mrs.) Director for Public Affairs Directorate in the University of Ghana, the said publication is false and must be treated as such.
In a letter dated February 17, 2025,
”The University of Ghana has noted with concern a publication on the social media handles of Joy News, also shared by Joy 99.7 FM, falsely alleging that the University has collected over GHC11 million in graduation fees without providing medallions and scroll holders to graduands.
These claims are misleading and do not reflect the facts.
If each of the 15,776 expected graduands pays the Graduation fee of GHS500, the expected total should be GHS7,888,000 and not GHC11 million as being falsely reported. Additionally, the University wishes to clarify that the GHC500.00 graduation fee per graduand covers multiple essential services and items, including:
- Rental of Graduation Gown Set – This includes the gown and, where applicable, a cap or hood.
- Congregation Publication – The official publication related to the graduation ceremony.
- Graduation Medallion – A commemorative medallion for graduates.
- Scroll Holder – A holder for the official graduation certificate.
- University Souvenir – A University-branded scarf for female graduates and a tie for male graduates.
- Water – Provided to graduands during the ceremony.
- Administrative Overheads
We want to put on record that the University provided all the above-listed items except for the medallions and scroll holders.
It must be noted that the University, in an official notice dated February 10, 2025, informed the graduands of the February 2025 congregation ceremonies of procurement delays, which would affect the distribution of medallions and scroll holders during the sessions. The statement further captured the assurance of the University to make available to graduates the scroll holders and medallion at the appropriate time.
It is, therefore, unfortunate for JoyNews to put out a sensational story without recourse to readily available facts. We urge the public to disregard these misleading reports and rely on official University communications for accurate information.
The University remains committed to upholding the highest standards in all its operations, including the organisation of graduation ceremonies. We assure our graduands that every effort is being made to deliver the outstanding items promptly.
