As the conspiracy against the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, Muslim-Muslim ticket, ratcheted up, northern Christian leaders revealed plans to back any of the primary political contenders of the opposition political parties as their consensus candidate in the 2023 election.
We can recall how some APC Christian leaders spoke out against the Muslim-Muslim ticket.
One of their grievances was that the single faith ticket prevented Northern Christian party officials from running for office.
They confirmed yesterday that they have decided to work with their Muslim colleagues in the north to assist one of the opposition presidential aspirants in order to oust the APC’s same-faith ticket.
Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Babachir David Lawal, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, led the group.
Reports suggest the aggrieved politicians are contemplating Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), who has proposed a Muslim-Christian mutual ticket, as their potential consensus candidate.
A statement containing the decision was signed by a former deputy governor of Sokoto State and the minister of water resources who served under President Olusegun Obasanjo, Mukhari Shagari, and Dogara.
The statement issued yesterday was the outcome of an advisory symposium and debate held on Saturday at the NAF Conference Centre in Kado, Abuja, between northern Muslim political leaders and APC Christian leaders.
The APC Northern Christian leaders claimed that their members in all 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory backed the resolution wholeheartedly.
