Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president and the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, has argued that northerners should support him in the 2023 election rather than a candidate of Yoruba or Igbo ancestry.
During a Saturday interactive session with the Arewa Joint Committee in Kaduna State, the PDP presidential candidate made the remark in response to a question posed by Baba Hakeem Ahmed, spokesman for the Northern Elder’s Forum.

Atiku argued that Northerners should support him rather than a candidate of Igbo or Yoruba ancestry.
Atiku responded, “Why should Northerners vote for him?”
“The typical northerner needs to support a candidate who is from the North, understands that region, and is able to forge ties with other parts of the country.”
“I am a Pan-Nigerian who was born in the north, and I stand before you. I am the candidate that Northerners need, not a Yoruba or Igbo.

He should have known that he has supporters from other tribes who are not
northerners. Thus, he could have rephrased his statement to make it more
convincing and non-discriminatory.
