While speaking to the Arewa Joint Youth Committee, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party, responded to the assertion that he had detained Mallan Nasir El-Rufai while he was in Anambra State for the by-election.

The report states that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai said Peter Obi had him held for 48 hours in Anambra in 2013 and that he is now the governor of Kaduna State and Peter Obi is travelling to Kaduna.
Peter Obi maintained that he had no involvement in his arrest and custody and that his arrest was the responsibility of the state Commissioner of Police.

He claimed, “There’s no way I could have done that. My chairman, I never asked anyone to arrest you. As Governor of Anambra State, I have the first APC best policeman in Nigeria, and he is from Kano, so where will I give the order and tell a man who lives in my house every day that I want to deal with his people?” The police commissioner who was in charge at the time, the AIG, and the GMD who was planning for that election were all from Adamawa state.
