Who they are: The British Embassy in Riga is part of a global network that represents British political, economic, and consular interests around the world, and they are currently looking for a Political & Economic Officer.
What they are looking for:
The incumbent will be accountable for achieving HMG objectives and UK-Latvia Joint Declaration priorities, with a particular emphasis on economic analysis, energy, climate, education, and prosperity.
The job holder will also be responsible for delivering projects related to the issues they lead on that are funded by HMG program funding streams. Furthermore, the job holder will provide cover for the Communications Officer as needed.
The incumbent will be in charge of developing and maintaining a network of internal and external contacts within HMG, relevant Latvian line ministries, local NGOs, academia, and other partners.
This work will include research and reporting on Latvian domestic politics as well as Latvia’s position in multilateral institutions such as the EU and the UN on issues such as the economy, climate, and digital, including 5G.
The jobholder will use their contacts, as well as academic and media sources, to provide policy advice on the issues they lead on, as well as support for the wider Political Team, which will feed into reporting and briefing for ministers and senior officials in the FCDO.
Main responsibilities and duties:
Political/Climate/Energy/SIN
• Lead and provide local and regional (Baltics/Nordic-Baltic) economic, energy, climate change, competitiveness, digital (including 5G), education, agriculture, and fisheries analysis and reporting.
• Establish and maintain contacts with key government officials, and representatives from civil society, business, and academia.
• Attend official meetings and engage with government officials, non-governmental organizations, and business representatives on specific topics as assigned by the HMA, DHM, and the Head of Political Team.
• Conduct research and report on other issues on behalf of the Political Team as determined by staffing gaps or business needs.
• Assist in the achievement of the Baltic Science and Innovation (SIN) Adviser’s objectives in Latvia.
• Assist the Political Officer by maintaining key contacts on JHA, citizens’ rights, and travel requirements.
•When necessary, provide cover for the Communications Officer, including maintaining contacts with key analysts, officials, and media journalists, as well as participating in/organizing daily press briefings for the HMA, DHM, and section heads.
Project Administration
• Manage projects funded by HMG programme funding streams (FCDO, BEIS, DIT) by liaising with relevant sections within the Embassy, Nordic-Baltic Network colleagues, implementing partners, and contractors.
• Present concepts for potential Latvian and regional activities (Baltic/NBN).
• Work with the Europe Network’s prosperity attaches to develop joint projects.
• Prepare draft reports on projects within the scope of responsibility for approval by the Post Programme Board.
Other:
• Monitoring and reporting by the press and media: Provide colleagues with analysis and advice, as well as reporting on relevant political and business stories/developments.
• Assist in the planning of visits and events.
• Collaborate closely with colleagues on public diplomacy events to support Embassy goals (including conferences, media campaigns, visits and projects).
Qualifications, skills, and experience are required.
• When necessary, assist HMA and DHM with meetings, interpretation, and translation.
• Strong project management and administration abilities.
• Complete professional fluency in English and Latvian (C1/C2 level CEFR framework*).
• A university degree (BA equivalent or higher) in international relations, politics, law, or a related field is required.
• A solid understanding of international relations as well as EU institutions and policymaking.
• Superior research and briefing abilities.
• Self-motivation and the ability to work with minimal supervision
• Excellent interpersonal and teamwork abilities.
• Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Outlook.
• Excellent social media skills, including knowledge of Facebook and Twitter.
Qualifications, skills, and experience desired
It would be advantageous if:
• Solid understanding of domestic and international policy issues, particularly those pertaining to the economy, energy, and climate.
• Event management and/or visit planning experience.

This is a full-time, permanent position with a weekly salary of $37.5.
The Embassy offers the following benefits to all of its employees:

The successful candidate must pass a professional background check as well as a security clearance.
