Parents often send their children to tertiary institutions to boast about the success of their children one day when they graduate.
News of a child’s passing, therefore, replaces such long-awaited announcement of a proud moment, thereby leaving parents in dire psychological stress.
There have been a lot of stories recently about deaths among tertiary students in Ghana. The recent ones were reported at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Most students come to these institutions so full of promise only to meet untimely death due to factors such as illness or accident, and in extreme cases, suicide.
While death is an inevitable part of life, the pain of losing their children in such a way is deep to the parents.
With such emotional and financial investments in the education of their children, these parents are often left to take comfort in the age-old saying, “Dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return.”
