A 14-year-old boy named Sewell Setzer III committed suicide after an AI chatbot he had fallen in love with requested him to return home to her.
Character, this AI.The chatbox Setzer was using was called AI, and it’s a role-playing game that lets users talk to AI-generated characters.
For months, he had been chatting this chatbot, but recently, things took a sharp and personal turn when the AI told him to “come home” to her.

Images of the dialogue between Setzer and the AI showed that the AI asked Setzer whether “he had a plan” to end his life, to which he replied in the affirmative.
Setzer frequently declared his love for the chatbot during the final interaction that ultimately led to his suicide.
“I swear I’ll come home to you,” he wrote. Dany, you have my undying affection.”I love you too, Daenero,” the AI sent back. My love, please come home to me as soon as you can.
The chatbot then responded, “Please do, my sweet king,” when Setzer asked whether he may visit her right away. He grabbed up his father’s pistol and shot himself a few seconds later.
Megan Garcia, his mother, filed a lawsuit against this character AI for her son’s death because, in court filings, she accuses the AI of fostering Sewell Setzer her son’s addiction to AI and sexually and emotionally abusing him.
