The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has met with former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, at the latter’s office in Abuja.

The visit comes amid ongoing consultations towards forming a political coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Today’s meeting comes barely 24 hours after Obi met with former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, at his Asokoro residence in Abuja.

Both Shekarau and Malami are among the list of opposition political heavyweights being linked to the proposed coalition, which includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, among others.

The coalition talks follow the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, where Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged winner with 8.8 million votes. Tinubu’s victory came amid a divided opposition, with Atiku and Obi finishing second and third respectively, each pulling millions of votes but ultimately unable to stop the APC’s hold on power.

Since then, there have been growing calls from political observers and civil society groups for the opposition to unite ahead of 2027 to avoid another fragmented contest.
