The government of Niger State on Wednesday ordered the immediate closure of the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) over the increasing rate of insecurity in the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, in a statement, said the closure of the institution is aimed at curbing the degeneration of law and order in the school.

According to Usman, the decision stemmed from the numerous security breaches experienced following the killing of a student near the university’s campus.

He also said that the incident has caused outrage among students, leading to protests and a demand for improved security within the school’s environs.

In addition, the protesting students also called for justice for their murdered colleague.

“The safety of all citizens, particularly students, is a top priority for the government,” Usman said in the statement.

He also urged the institution’s management, staff, and students to remain calm and collaborate with the security operatives and agencies in the state.

The SSG assured the institution’s community that an investigation into the matter is currently ongoing.

He also said that the state government is determined to fish out the perpetrators of the act and bring them to justice.

In addition, the SSG said adequate measures are being taken by the state to ensure stability and peace across the institution’s community.

Recall that a 300-level student simply identified as Abdulkareem was attacked and killed in his off-campus home.

Abdulkareem was said to have been murdered by some suspected phone snatchers operating around his home leading to the closure of the institution within two days.
