Senator Abubakar Girei, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has declared that Nigerians cannot trust the leaders of the newly formed ADC coalition, describing them as part of the political class that wrecked the country.
Girei, who represented Adamawa Central in the Senate between 1999 and 2003, accused the coalition members of being self-serving politicians united by personal grievances and ambition, rather than genuine reform.
In a statement reacting to the mobilisation drive of the coalition, the former senator said the group has “fallen into a trap” by choosing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform.
He said: “Ask them why they abandoned the SDP, which was their preferred choice.
“They will soon realise that ADC has more aggressive vampires than those that chased them out of SDP.”
Girei dismissed the coalition as a gathering of disgruntled politicians, many of whom, he said, are upset because President Bola Tinubu “did not patronise them.”
“Taking a closer look at the coalition’s membership, it is obvious that they are groups of aggrieved people for different reasons; while some feel bad because President Tinubu did not patronise them, others are for personal reasons of wanting to be President by all means,” he said.
The former lawmaker accused the coalition leaders of being part of the same political elite that allegedly looted public funds and undermined good governance in the past.
His words: “Many of the individuals now standing at the forefront of this coalition for change are the same people who ruined Nigeria.
“These are not newcomers to politics. They are seasoned actors with decades of experience in manipulating the system, looting the treasury, and protecting the status quo.”
He questioned the coalition’s moral authority to preach change.
“Why should Nigerians trust them to effect any positive change? You cannot be a part of those who destroyed a system, and now you want to claim you are a saint,” he stated.
Girei praised President Tinubu’s performance, insisting that the current administration is addressing the damage allegedly caused by some of the same figures now rallying under the ADC.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fixing the mess this set of people has caused,” he added.
