The Concerned National Service Scheme (NSS) Personnel Association of Ghana (CONSPAG) has initiated a nationwide strike effective today, July 3, 2024, over unpaid allowances.
The strike comes after the government’s failure to pay the stipends owed to NSS personnel serving in the public sector.
Delayed Payments Causing Hardship
The delay in the disbursement of allowances has become a norm, causing untold hardship for graduates who depend on the stipend for their survival. Some personnel under the 2023-2024 batch say they have not received their allowances since January 2024.
“The delayed payment is a worry to us because as graduates our parents someway want us to be fending for ourselves so most of us depend on the allowance. If it delays, we really get worried,” said Prince Boadi, an NSS personnel.
Negotiations with the Government
The National Service Personnel Association has been negotiating with the government but warned that if they don’t come to an agreement, a strike will follow.
The association is demanding the immediate payment of the outstanding allowances to avert the industrial action.
“We are telling the scheme and government that this is unacceptable,” stated Nana Adu Gyamfi Mensah, the Secretary of the National Service Personnel Association.
He explained that they have been paid only two of four months outstanding allowances.
Potential Impact on Public Services
The strike by NSS personnel is likely to have a significant impact on public services, as these graduates play a crucial role in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and administration.
The government must act swiftly to resolve the issue and ensure that the allowances are paid promptly to avoid further disruptions to essential services.
As the strike continues, the National Service Personnel Association remains steadfast in its demands for fair treatment and timely payment of their allowances.
The government must prioritize the welfare of these young graduates and ensure that they are adequately supported during their service to the nation.
