”There is no way you should feed a tertiary student they should do that themselves” according to the minister
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced that the decision aims to address financial support delays experienced by students in colleges of education while promoting autonomy and self-sufficiency among them.
The government has assured that the teacher trainee allowance will remain in place “for the time being.”
Each trainee currently receives GH¢400 monthly, which includes a GH¢200 feeding grant paid directly to their institutions. The Minister emphasized that maintaining these allowances is crucial for the well-being and future prospects of students.
The proposed transition to an enhanced student loan scheme is intended to allow students to manage their own feeding and personal expenses.
The Minister pointed out that it is not sustainable for the government to continue providing allowances at the tertiary level indefinitely.
Instead, the plan is to gradually phase out these allowances in favor of a loan system that would give students more control over their finances
