Four people confirmed dead as boat capsizes in Kebbi

0

Four people have been confirmed dead in a boat mishap that occurred at the Yauri town market river bank of Kebbi State.

It was gathered that the boat capsized after it was flooded with water from the river.

The Disaster Management Team Lead for the Nigerian Red Cross Society in Yauri, Nafiu Nuhu said the incident happened earlier this week.

According to Nuhu, the driver of the boat and the passengers went into panic after it was flooded with water from the river.

He said this led to the boat’s drowning alongside its occupants.

“Some of the victims were rescued from the submerging/drowning accident with the assistance of our members from the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and local community members,” Nuhu said.

He also noted that the organisation is working with NIWA and residents of the community to mobilise emergency assistance and a search team for the missing passengers.

Nuhu stated that some bodies recovered from the river were on Tuesday transported to Hikiya village, located across the Yauri River

Iranian Missile hits Technology park in Israel, Microsoft Building Damaged

0

Iran on Friday launched direct strikes on southern Israel, firing up to three missiles that struck civilian and strategic sites in and around Beersheba. Among the targets was the Gav-Yam Negev Advanced Technologies Park, which reportedly hosts active military and cyber installations. At least seven people were wounded in the attack.

Local media reported that one missile evaded Israel’s air defenses and impacted a residential car park, leaving a small crater amid vehicles set ablaze. Flames spread to nearby homes, and the blaze reached an office occupied by Microsoft employees. Israel Railways temporarily closed the Beersheba North–University station—part of the intercity line connecting Tel Aviv to Beersheba and Dimona—before resuming service later in the day.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) justified the strike on what it termed “close cooperation with the Israeli army” by the tech park and the Microsoft office. In an IRGC statement, it said:

“The Microsoft office was attacked due to its close cooperation with the Israeli army and its being part of the system supporting aggression, and not just a civilian entity. The cyber area that was attacked also includes the residences of people from the espionage and artificial intelligence fields, who operate in direct cooperation with the enemy army and its security apparatus.”

State media in Tehran confirmed that the missile salvo specifically targeted the Gav-Yam Negev facility. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared the operation on X: “The Zionist enemy is being punished. It is being punished right now.”

Since Israel launched its military operation against Iran last Friday, Tehran has retaliated with hundreds of missiles. Despite Israel’s advanced air-defense systems, the military has acknowledged gaps in its ability to intercept all incoming projectiles. Under military censorship rules, both local and international outlets are barred from publishing precise details of the sites struck.

The donated items, provided by the KGL Foundation, include thirty (30) medals each (gold and silver) for the winners and runners-up of all ten Regional Colts Championships, as well as the Northern Region and Greater Accra Girls Colts Championships. In total, 720 medals were distributed.

Russia ‘On the Verge’ of Recession, Putin Minister Says

0

Russia’s Economy Minister, Maxim Reshetnikov, warned today that the country is “on the verge” of recession, basing his assessment on “current business sentiment and indicators” he shared at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Urging action, he added: “Everything else depends on our decisions,” and called on the central bank to extend “a little love for the economy” by adjusting its monetary stance.

Quoting him: “The numbers indicate cooling, but all our numbers are [like] a rearview mirror.”

“Judging by the way businesses currently feel and the indicators, we are already, it seems to me, on the brink of going into a recession”, he added.

Maxim Reshetnikov

In October 2024, Russia’s central bank raised its key interest rate to 21 percent to rein in inflation. It held that level until this month, when it trimmed the rate by one percentage point, to 20 percent. Despite the easing, Russia’s GDP growth slowed to just 1.4 percent year-on-year in Q1 2025—the weakest quarterly performance in two years.

Analysts point to massive government spending on the war in Ukraine and widespread labour shortages as drivers of persistent price rises. Annual inflation has remained above 8 percent—more than double the central bank’s 4 percent target—for over a year. Economists caution that growth fuelled by defence production “is unsustainable and does not reflect a real increase in productivity.”

Meanwhile, in Ukraine’s east, local officials and social media channels reported that Kharkiv and Odesa came under drone attack in the early hours of Friday. There were no immediate casualty figures, but infrastructure and residential areas sustained damage.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog has raised fresh concerns about the Zaporizhzhia power plant—currently under Russian control. The International Atomic Energy Agency warned the facility “cannot start operating again as long as this large-scale war continues,” citing unresolved issues with cooling water and reliance on off-site electricity.

On the diplomatic front, both Moscow and Kyiv announced another exchange of captured soldiers on Thursday. “Our people are returning home from Russian captivity,” said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Ukraine’s exchange agency noted the swap involved “seriously ill and wounded” servicemen, a fact later confirmed by Russia’s defence ministry.

President Zelenskyy condemned Russia’s support for Iran amid the Middle East conflict, arguing it underscores the need for stronger sanctions against the Kremlin. “When one of their accomplices loses their capability to export war, Russia is weakened and tries to interfere,” he said. “This is so cynical and proves time and again that aggressive regimes cannot be allowed to unite and become partners.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha added that Russia’s recent condemnations of strikes on Iran reveal its double standards. “The only rational conclusion is that Russia cannot be trusted in any situation, and it is always part of the problem rather than the solution.”

President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku meets committee for inaugural 2nd Division Elite U19 Championship

CAF 2nd Vice President and President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has met with the five-member committee tasked with overseeing the implementation of the novel 2nd Division Elite U19 Championship, an initiative under the GFA’s Power to the Youth policy.

During the meeting held at the GFA Headquarters, President Simeon-Okraku commended the committee members and their support staff for their willingness to serve Ghana football at this crucial level. He expressed appreciation for their commitment to a programme that is set to play a critical role in shaping the future of football talent in the country.

The President reiterated that the championship is a fulfilment of a pledge he made during the last GFA Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram. The initiative is designed to unearth, nurture, and elevate talented players from the grassroots level, reinforcing the Association’s long-term vision for structured and inclusive football development.

Abdul Salam Yakubu, Chairman of the Committee and President of New Edubiase United Football Club, welcomed the responsibility with great enthusiasm. He acknowledged the trust placed in the committee and pledged to lead an effective talent identification programme that will set a new standard in youth football development.

The Abdul Salam-led committee will oversee the organisation and execution of the 2nd Division Elite U19 Championship, which specifically targets players born between January 1 and December 31, 2007. The committee has been granted the mandate to review and, where necessary, amend the eligibility criteria for the Championship.

The competition aims to provide a dedicated platform for Second Division players to showcase their talent and gain visibility for potential elevation into elite youth academies, national youth teams and professional ranks.

This strategic initiative further strengthens the GFA’s commitment to building a sustainable football ecosystem grounded in early talent identification, technical development, and equitable opportunity. It aligns seamlessly with ongoing programmes under the Power to the Youth policy, including the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS), Elite Academies, and the Catch Them Young Refereeing Project.

Through this new championship, the GFA continues to create meaningful pathways for young Ghanaian footballers, ensuring that the nation’s future stars are discovered, developed, and positioned for long-term success.

The meeting was presided over by GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku and attended by Committee Chairman Abdul Salam Yakubu, Vice Chairman Enoch Agyare Addo, and members Edem Kofi Ansah, Michael Kwabla Fiaduse  and Samuel Owusu Amoah.

Providing technical and administrative support to the committee are Daasebre Adu-Asare, Regional Football Associations Coordinator,  Maxwell Caesar Kemeh from the Competitions Department and Patrick Akoto, Senior Communications Manager at the Ghana Football Association.

You don’t negotiate with terrorists

0

The Citizens for Equity and Justice Initiative (CEJI) has criticized Governors Dauda Lawal of Zamfara and Dikko Radda of Katsina over a controversial peace meeting with Ado Aleru, a notorious bandit leader declared wanted by Nigerian security agencies.

The meeting, which was held last Saturday in Bichi community, Danmusa local government area of Katsina, featured traditional rulers, local government officials, senior officers of the Nigerian Army, and top representatives from both states.

Aleru, who carries a ₦5 million bounty, was captured on video addressing the gathering and calling for peace between Fulani herders and farming communities.

Aleru has been linked to several atrocities in the northwest, including mass killings, kidnappings, and the displacement of thousands, according to human rights organizations.

His appearance at a government-sanctioned meeting has triggered national outrage, with many describing it as a betrayal of justice.

In a statement on Friday, Abdulmumin Sarki, CEJI president, described the governors’ participation in the meeting as a “moral collapse of governance”.

Sarki said: “These are the same governors who, while campaigning, condemned so-called peace deals with blood-stained warlords.

“Now in power, they are doing precisely what they once derided — normalizing criminals as stakeholders in the governance process, even as tens of thousands of citizens remain unaccounted for due to the very violence these men unleashed.”

CEJI, a non-partisan civil society group, said the presence of state and security officials at the meeting was “an affront to every Nigerian who has lost a loved one to banditry.”

The group cited a 2023 report by Amnesty International that recorded over 10,000 deaths and widespread displacement in the northwest as a result of banditry and communal violence.

“You do not negotiate with terrorists in the open, not when the blood of their victims is still drying, not when they remain armed, wanted, and unrepentant.

“It is a dangerous precedent that delegitimises state authority and emboldens violent actors,” Sarki said.

Governor Lawal had, in August 2023, ruled out talks with bandits, describing the approach as “a failed strategy that has only given criminals more time to regroup and rearm.”

Similarly, Radda once described dialogue with criminal groups as “a misguided approach that rewarded impunity.”

CEJI said both governors must explain their U-turns and take responsibility for endangering public trust.

“The Nigerian state cannot simultaneously claim to be fighting insecurity while its chief executives are sharing stages with those they should be arresting.

“This is a contradiction that weakens the rule of law and puts lives at risk,” Sarki said

The group called on the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and IGP Kayode Egbetokun to investigate how a declared fugitive like Aleru was able to resurface and engage with state officials publicly.

“It is unacceptable that a man declared wanted since 2020 was able to move around with such impunity, engage state actors, and issue statements without fear of arrest,” the group said.

CEJI also urged the National Human Rights Commission and international organizations to examine the meeting as a possible breach of Nigeria’s obligations under international law.

“Negotiating with known perpetrators of crimes against humanity, without any form of justice or accountability, is a breach of international norms.

“That meeting undermines the rule of law. It tells victims there is no justice. It tells future terrorists that with enough weapons and violence, they too can get invited to state dinners.

“We strongly condemn that so-called peace meeting and urge the security agencies to investigate that highly provocative gathering,” the group stated.
