The disqualification of fully vetted aspirants from the ongoing UG SRC elections has hit the necks of many stakeholders in this year’s student council elections.
In a more serious matter, nonresident students in the University of Ghana are on bent knees calling for the comeback of the two icons into the race, Guru and Lawrence Eligah.
However, it seems the spot is more on the socialite Guru, known in real life as Maradona Yeboah, who had earlier paired with Jeffery Adu Yeboah (Jay Lit).
According to a statement by the EC boss, Mr. Ibn Ibrahim, he quoted Article 30 Clause 1 Section (a) of the UGSRC election constitution, citing that the two ” Maradona Yeboah and Lawrence EdinamEgleh, President and Vice-Presidential aspirants respectfully, are not eligible to contest for the highest office of the student council in the university due to their nonresidential status.
While the university had clearly stated in its offer of admission that ”accommodation on campus is not guaranteed”, this then burdens the student after accepting his or her offer of admission to look around for accommodation.
Moreso, gabsfeed.com chanced on the revised provisions of the UGSRC Constitution, where it states in Chapter Six(6) that ” The qualifications to contest an election as an executive officer have been modified to include, inter alia, the requirement for attaining a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 or better at the date of filing nominations to contest elections. A requirement that a candidate for election should have been a resident student for at least one academic year as well as the requirement that only graduate students who pursued their undergraduate studies in this university can contest elections has been expunged”.
From the forgoing, it clearly means that the disqualification of Guru and Jeffery Adu Yeboah’s presidential ticket, including others, is not valid and indeed a very trying one.
”It may also mean that the EC boss has not been provided with a copy of the revised UGSRC constitution,” a speculation had said.
Maradona Yeboah (Guru) and Jay Lit have since petitioned the EC Chair and the UG SRC Judicial Board through their deductive reasoning that their ticket be held so that they can exercise their basic rights as ”Junior members” in the university (Regulation 9 Section 1) of the undergraduate prospectus.
If you are following this year’s UG SRC elections, you would know how fascinating it is, as the EC boss has already implicated himself in a number of things that seem contrary to its roles among other campaign heats.
”Guru and Jay Lit should be brought back again!” the advocators shouted.
