After several Knife attacks in the Paris metro The alleged perpetrator was admitted to a psychiatric clinic. The public prosecutor’s office in the French capital said the detention was “classified as incompatible with his state of health” and was therefore lifted on Saturday evening.

According to the investigative authority, the 25-year-old man from Mali stabbed three women with a knife at the République, Arts et Métiers and Opéra stations on Friday afternoon. The man was identified through surveillance camera footage and after escaping from the subway thanks to the location of his cell phone north of Paris arrested.

Two of the injured women were taken to hospital and the third reported herself to an emergency room. None of them suffered life-threatening injuries.

The alleged perpetrator was not deported due to missing documents

The alleged perpetrator was subsequently investigated for attempted murder and bodily harm. According to official information, he was already known to the police for several crimes. According to the French Interior Ministry, the man was sentenced to prison in January 2024 for theft and sexual assault.

After his release from prison in July, he actually had to leave France. However, since the documents required for deportation could not be obtained, he was released from the deportation center after 90 days.

Just a few days before the knife attacks in the metro, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez had called for security measures to be increased in advance of the New Year’s Eve celebrations. He urged people to be particularly careful on public transport.
