In the year that ended, the organic food industry continued to grow: The German Farmers Association According to its market report, expects growth of around eight percent for the organic industry. Accordingly, the 18 billion euro mark in sales is likely to be significantly exceeded this year.
The growth drivers were once again the organic own brands of the retail chains. According to the information, a particularly large number of organic products were sold in supermarkets and drugstores. After a long dry spell, natural food retailers were once again among the winners among the sales channels.
Domestic organic production is stagnating
However, according to the farmers’ association, organic production in the fields and in the stables continues to lag behind the increasing demand. The willingness to convert in agriculture was once again extremely cautious in 2025, according to the market report. At the beginning of the year, the organic industry association pointed out that the offer behind the demand remain behind – with the danger that trade can only satisfy them through imports.
Organic farming continued to grow last year, but only slowly. According to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, 11.5 percent of agricultural land is now farmed organically. In 2023 it was 11.4 percent. The goal of a 30 percent organic share by 2030, which the traffic light coalition once set, remains a long way away.
The number of organic businesses actually fell by 2.2 percent last year; their share is now around 14 percent. The reasons for this were, among other things, age-related operational cessations without a successor. Organic farming also entails higher unit costs, which is why switching to it is a question of calculation for many farmers.
Market for organic food also grew last year
Total organic sales had already increased in 2024: according to the Federal Organic Food Industry, by 5.7 percent, to a record value of 17 billion euros. The industry thus continued to leave the decline of 2022 behind. At that time, the organic market slipped into the red for the first time. During high inflation, organic products, which usually cost more, were also purchased less. However, the industry recovered.
