Schools in the Upper West region are gearing up to secure a place at the national level of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) competition.
Despite five schools from the region qualifying for the 2023 edition, none advanced to the quarterfinals, leaving the region without any seeded schools for this year’s contest.
St. Francis Xavier SHS, the region’s only seeded school from last year’s competition, is joining over twenty schools in the regional qualifiers to earn a spot at the nationals. After losing their seed to the Ghana Secondary Technical School, St. Francis Xavier SHS, the region’s pride in the NSMQ, is starting anew from the regional qualifiers.
The school has faced significant setbacks over the past five years, often failing to secure a seeded position in the competition. The current contestants are now tasked with restoring the school’s former glory.
Last year, St. Francis of Assisi Girls SHS was eliminated by Achimota School at the national stage after defeating Nandom SHS. Additionally, Wa SHS, Lawra SHS, and Queen of Peace SHS all missed securing a seed for the region.
However, the schools are determined to reclaim their status in the 2024 edition.
A total of twenty-three schools in the Upper West region are set to compete in the regional qualifiers for one of the five coveted spots at the national tournament.
Nandom SHS, aiming for a comeback after missing out last year, will face intense competition from Lawra SHS, Jirapa SHS, Ko SHS, and Daffiama SHS. The stakes are high as these schools strive to represent their region with distinction
