The federal government planned to use the additional contributions health insurance to remain stable in the short term. The Federal Council had to do this before Christmas passed an austerity packagewhich is primarily intended to curb costs in clinics. Some large health insurance companies had nevertheless announced increases in contributions at the turn of the year. They think the austerity package is too small. For 2025, total expenditure for health insurance companies is forecast to be around 347 billion euros. An increase to 370 billion euros is expected in the new year.
The Additional contribution is in addition to the fixed health insurance contribution rate of 14.6 percent that applies to all and was once introduced to promote competition between health insurance companies. In the end, each health insurance company can decide for itself whether and how much to increase it.
