Jeffrey Epstein: US Department of Justice releases new Epstein files

The US Department of Justice has new files related to the convicted sex offender’s case Jeffrey Epstein published. The ministry is complying with a law passed in November that requires the US government to release all investigative files in the case. The deadline for publication was Friday.

The first tranche of documents released today contains hundreds of thousands of files. Further documents will follow in the coming weeks.

Both Democrats and Republicans had been calling for the investigative files to be made public for months. President Donald Trump had long opposed the move, even though releasing the files was one of his key campaign promises. In the end, members of both parties in Congress got together and passed a law forcing the government to publish.

However, it also includes some exceptions. For example, the names of victims can be blacked out. Information related to ongoing investigations may also be withheld. Shortly before the law was passed, Trump ordered several investigations against prominent Democrats.
