Millions of people around the world have already welcomed the New Year. The global start was at 11 a.m. German time in the South Sea atoll of Kiritimati, which has 7,300 inhabitants and is part of the island state of Kiribati. New Zealand and parts followed, among others Australia.
The Australian metropolis of Sydney celebrated the start of the new year at 2 p.m. German time with a gigantic fireworks display around the Harbor Bridge and the Opera House. Nine tons of pyrotechnics were detonated under strict safety precautions.

In parts of Asia, millions of people have already started the new year. In Singapore, numerous onlookers were expected to attend the fireworks display at Marina Bay with a view of the skyline.
In Bangkok, people celebrated by the Chao Phraya River. The lights of the huge fireworks display are traditionally reflected there. Many people celebrate the turn of the year every year on party boats to experience the show up close.
In the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the traditional New Year’s Eve fireworks display over Victoria Harbor was canceled. After a serious fire in a residential building with at least 160 deaths at the end of November, the authorities canceled the major event.
Four hours after Germany, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil follows at 4 a.m. CET. The New Year is finally rung in in New York at six o’clock German time.
