Power outage in Berlin: Governing mayor describes power attack as terrorism

For the Governing Mayor of BerlinKai Wegner, the attack on the capital’s power supply has crossed the threshold into terrorism. “This is not just arson or sabotage. This is terrorism,” said the CDU politician in the Evening show of RBB television.

“It was a left-wing extremist group that once again attacked our infrastructure and thereby threatened the lives of people, of older people who may need ventilators, of families with small children,” he said Wegner. “And we have to catch these perpetrators now.”

Federal authorities also got involved

According to Wegner, the police, the State Criminal Police Office and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution are involved. “We are also in contact with the Federal Criminal Police Office, with the federal level, because this is no joke, but a terrorist attack has happened here.” Now the pressure must be increased to arrest the perpetrators.

After the arson attack on a cable bridge on the Teltow Canal, which a left-wing extremist group claimed responsibility for, 45,000 households and 2,200 companies were without power in southwest Berlin on Saturday morning. Supply has now been restored for around 14,000 households and almost 500 commercial customers, according to the operator Stromnetz Berlin. Several large hospitals are also back online.

In the worst case scenario, the remaining customers will have to wait until Thursday afternoon. According to the state-owned company, it will take until then before everyone affected gets electricity again.
