The federal government wants to implement central infrastructure projects more quickly in the future. The Federal Cabinet Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) introduced a bill that is intended to significantly speed up the planning and approval process.
Larger modernization projects should therefore be classified as having an “overriding public interest”. Among other things, this should lead to procedures being streamlined, double checks being avoided and processes becoming more digitized.
Once parliamentary discussions have been completed, the so-called Infrastructure Future Act is expected to come into force from mid-2026. The background to the initiative is the special fund set up by the black-red coalition worth 500 billion euros for the renovation of the Infrastructure. To date, large construction projects in Germany have often dragged on for many years. Accelerated procedures should not only save time, but also reduce costs, as construction projects regularly become more expensive over the course of the process.
