Storm in the USA: Winter storm causes flooding and deaths in California


Severe winter storms hit the south at Christmas California Floods and causes deaths. At least two people died from falling trees or traffic accidents related to the storm, US media reported. Flooded streets, washed-away cars and mudslides were reported in several regions, and more than 125,000 households were temporarily without power.

Evacuation warnings or orders were in effect in numerous districts, and areas around were also affected Los Angeleswhere there were serious fires at the beginning of the year. The heavy rainfall was triggered by a so-called atmospheric river, a band of moisture-saturated air.

State of emergency declared in several regions

The US Weather Service warned of further heavy rain and snow in the mountains for Thursday and Friday. There is a risk of flash floods, and numerous streams could overflow their banks. Burnt areas are particularly at risk, where landslides and mudslides can easily occur.
