UG Lecturer suspended from the University of Ghana for sex̌ually harassing female students

The University of Ghana through a joint release have suspended a number of its employees and students 

The University cited through its statutes and code of conduct and why the decision is important at this time

Dr. Sampson Obeng a lecturer in the Sociology department willfully or unwillfully broke the sexual harassment code contrary to section 1.1 ( A) of the sexual harassment and miscount policy section 10.0 of the conduct for Academic Staff 

As a result of this , he Dr. Sampson Obeng  is slapped with the following charges from the University of Ghana; 

I) Issue a formal witten apology to the complainant.

II) Suspension from the University for two semesters: the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year and the

first semester of the 2025/2026 academic year.

III)Barred from submiting an application for promotion to the next highest grade for one year following the end of the suspension period

IV) To undergo training on sexual harassment and misconduct, to be conducted by the Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee

According to the University, the sanctions above are in line with Section 15.0 of the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff.

It would be recalled that the University of Ghana (UG)  suspended Professor Ransford Gyampo and Dr Paul Butakor for six months and four months respectively for their roles in in similar sexual harassment scandal which hit the university in October 2019

Sexual harassment is a menace which threatens the academic freedom in most Universities in Ghana where gabsfeed.com has received such complains from female students where according to them male Lecturers have threatened to fail them if they do not succumb to their sexual demands.

While we cannot tell the truth of the matter, our outlets is finding a proper means of reporting such cases to the university authorities sk that it will be eventually investigated.

Amidst this, it is also reported that some students have been  affected by this decision made by the University through a cited number of cases including plagiarism , conspiracy threatened to assault other students, possession of narcotics which .
