The turnaround was unexpected, even within the AfD Some MPs rubbed their eyes: The AfD leadership distanced itself from Donald Trump with clear words on Tuesday after he used military force to kidnap the Venezuelan head of state Maduro and is now thinking more and more loudly about occupying Greenland. After the parliamentary group meeting, party leader Alice Weidel made a surprising statement.

She threw Trump alleges that he has not kept one of his central election promises, namely not to interfere in the affairs of other states. She emphasized the absolutely absurd situation that if Greenland were to be defended militarily by European NATO troops, General Alexus Grynkewich, an American would be in supreme command – and as such would have to fend off possible US aggression. On top of that, Trump’s actions would torpedo the peace negotiations with Ukraine and thus German security interests. Even Tino Chrupalla, who is known as a friend of Russia Weidel jumped in: “It is clear that Wild West methods should be rejected.”
