Prison system: “Treating prisoners with respect was always the basis for me”

TIME Crimes: Mr. Henke, you managed a correctional facility three times before your retirement in 2020. Commonly you would probably be called a prison warden. You describe yourself as a former head of the institution. Do you find the prison director to be derogatory?

Norbert Henke: It’s a rather antiquated term, but I don’t find it derogatory. It is different with the terms that are often used for officers of the general prison service: one term that comes from the prisoners is closer. This reduces the employees to the closing process and is also meant disrespectfully. The term supervisor reduces the employees’ tasks to the pure safety aspect, and we don’t really like that either. And what is also often used is the word guard. But it has a flavor that sounds a bit like a zoo. So you say “the law enforcement officers”. When I was playing, we always joked that we should have a competition to find a sensible term that wasn’t so cumbersome.
