South Korea’s parliament has passed a law against the publication of “false, fabricated information.” Media that publish such information must expect high compensation amounts. The bill was pushed by the ruling Democratic Party under Lee Jae Myung. She justifies the law with the growing threat of fake news and disinformation. According to the party, this poses a threat to democracy.

Journalists and civil rights activists, however, called on South Korean President Lee to veto the law. They criticize that the press is not adequately protected by the law and are critical reporting could be suppressed via civil servants, politicians and large companies.
