The MEP Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP) has it US sanctions hit female managing directors defended by HateAid. “Shake your head and carry on” is the motto, said the chairwoman of the Committee for Security and Defense in the EU Parliament Editorial Network Germany (RND).
Strack-Zimmermann emphasized the importance of the organization. HateAid protects “our democracy, especially online – based on European law,” said Strack-Zimmermann. “Attacks on this from outside show how self-confident and determined we need to be more than ever in Europe.”
The US government had the managing directors of HateAid, Anna-Lena von Hodenberg and Josephine Ballon, subject to entry bans and classified them as “radical activists.” This was justified by alleged censorship coming from HateAid. The organization is a “censor” under the Digital Services Act (DSA) and regularly demands access to data from social media platforms “in order to be able to censor it more strongly,” the USA said.

Von Hodenberg and Ballon rejected the US government’s allegations. The federal government also clearly criticized the move. A Briton who was also banned from entering the US because of alleged censorship on the Internet sued members of the US government.
HateAid offers psychological and legal support for people who are discriminated against, insulted, threatened or attacked online. In October, von Hodenberg was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her work. At the time it was said that she had done pioneering work by founding HateAid in 2018.
