The CSU wants to oblige state-funded projects in the fight against racism, anti-Semitism, Islamism and extremism to commit to the Basic Law. “We want a fundamental reboot of “living democracy”: with clear consequences for violations, a binding commitment to the German Basic Law as an unwavering prerequisite for any funding and measurable goals,” says a CSU position paper.

“Anyone who wants to make money from “living democracy” must commit to our democracy. You cannot be on the list of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and on the taxpayer’s payroll at the same time,” the letter reads. It is to be decided next week at the retreat of the CSU Bundestag members in the Upper Bavarian monastery of Seeon. The draft was available to the dpa news agency. Previously the platform had Table.Briefings reported.

The “Living Democracy” program promotes civil society commitment to democratic coexistence and work against radicalization in society. Recently there has been repeated criticism of funded projects. Research by the World on Sundayg suggested that some may be behind actors spreading anti-Semitism and extremism. Federal Minister for Family Affairs Karin Prien (CDU) has announced a comprehensive review.

Increase punishment

According to the CSU state group, organizations whose supporters commit crimes under the guise of the association’s purpose should have their non-profit status revoked. The CSU also wants to advocate for harsher punishments if the police, rescue workers or fire brigade are affected by acts of violence.

In addition, mosque associations and Islamic associations should be required to disclose their funding and donors, the letter continues. “Clubs and associations that receive money from foreign governments and organizations associated with them cannot receive government money from Germany or enter into cooperation with our government agencies,” the paper says.
