Aggression: Two out of three doctors experience violence in their everyday work

According to a survey, the majority of doctors in Germany have Violence at work experienced. According to the German medical journal Two out of three doctors have already experienced violence in the workplace. More than half of the 1,619 respondents said the situation had worsened in recent years.

According to the survey, in most cases doctors were verbally attacked, and in almost every second case there were physical attacks. Around 40 percent of those surveyed report psychological violence in the workplace, 16 percent report discrimination based on origin or religion. More than one in five people were temporarily restricted in their work as a result of the attacks, and ten percent of those affected were even restricted as a result unable to work.

According to the survey, the perpetrators are predominantly men acting alone who visit medical facilities as patients. In around a third of cases, the attackers come from the patient’s environment.

President of the German Medical Association calls for harsher penalties

In view of the figures, the President of the German Medical Association Klaus Reinhardt warns: “Anyone who attacks helpers destroys the relationship of trust on which medical care is based and thus endangers the functionality of the common good and the health system.”

Reinhardt therefore advocates for a nationwide reporting tool for such experiences of violence and calls for harsher punishments for the attackers.
