In the series “A question of nutrition” our expert advice provides answers to questions that many people ask themselves. This time it’s about silent inflammation. Can certain foods protect the body from damage? That’s what nutritionist Martin Smollich from the Schleswig-Holstein University Hospital says.
TIME ONLINE: Mr. Smollich, first of all: What exactly are inflammations?
Martin Smollich: Inflammation is the body’s biological response to harmful stimuli. The inflammatory reaction is intended to eliminate this stimulus. A distinction is made between acute and chronic inflammation. Everyone knows an acute situation: we accidentally cut our finger, pathogens penetrate and the immune system is activated locally – the finger hurts, turns red, swells. Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, causes little or no symptoms. That’s why they are called silent inflammationi.e. silent inflammation. The immune system is permanently activated and inflammation levels in the blood are increased. If symptoms do appear, they are very unspecific: those affected are exhausted, have difficulty concentrating, have body aches or intestinal problems.
