The mayor of Venice has issued an ordinance that prohibits music events, the serving of drinks on officially approved terraces and the sale of food and drinks by hawkers from 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Igniting fireworks is also prohibited.
According to the municipality’s website, the regulation applies within a 500 meter radius of churches and other religious buildings. Likewise, certain places in the Mestre district, which is on the mainland, are said to be largely quiet.
Grocery stores also have to close at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve. They are not allowed to reopen until 6 a.m. on Christmas Day. According to the city, the municipality wants to implement the regulation in response to the desire of many Venetians for peace and quiet Christmas progeny.
