One year after the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market, commemorations to remember the six dead and hundreds injured have begun. At the start, an emergency pastor, a doctor and a person affected spoke at an ecumenical service in Magdeburg’s St. John’s Church in the morning. They highlighted the solidarity and great willingness to help on the evening of the attack.
“It showed us one thing: We are there for each other, we stick together and stand up for ourselves,” said the person affected. “Despite the terrible act, we will not let our Christmas be taken away from us.” The screams are still in people’s minds to this day.
The bishop of the Catholic diocese MagdeburgGerhard Feige, recalled gestures of charity despite the horror of the attack in his sermon in St. John’s Church. With their quick willingness to help, people “lit a light” after the crime.
On December 20, 2024, a doctor from Saudi Arabia living in Saxony-Anhalt drove his car into the Magdeburg Christmas market and killed six people. More than 300 other people were injured, some seriously. The alleged perpetrator has been on trial since mid-November.
