France: French budget proposal fails in parliament

The French one Budget draft for 2026 there was no majority in parliament. As Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced, a mediation committee was unable to agree on a compromise. This makes it impossible for the budget to be passed on time by December 31st.

Lecornu’s actual goal was to reduce the budget deficit to 4.7 percent of gross domestic product. The budget version revised by the Senate included 5.3 percent. The National Assembly rejected the original budget in first reading.

The government had already announced that, in the event of failure, it would introduce a special law to initially transfer the current year’s budget. The debate on the new budget is scheduled to continue in January. There is no doubt that the special law will be passed by both chambers of parliament. The National Assembly could vote on it as early as Monday.
