Iran: Two people killed during protests in Iran


During protests in Iran Security forces used violence against demonstrators. According to media reports, two people were killed in the southwest. According to state media, a member of the Iranian security forces had previously been killed during protests in the western Iranian province of Lorestan.

In the midst of a severe economic crisis in the country, many people have been taking to the streets for five days in a row. There are reports from rural regions of a tough crackdown on the protests. The current protests were triggered by a sudden collapse in foreign exchange rates last Sunday.

In the south, a governor’s office was also attacked on Wednesday. The judicial authorities threatened to take “decisive” action against troublemakers.

The Iranian news agency Fars spoke of violence from demonstrators in Lordegan, around 650 kilometers south of Tehran. They threw stones at administrative buildings. The demonstrators targeted, among other things, the provincial governor’s office, a mosque, the town hall and banks, Fars said. The police used tear gas. Fars had previously also reported injuries, without giving a number.

Fars is officially independent, but is considered to be under the influence of the Revolutionary Guard.
