Security situation for Jews in Germany: Central Council of Jews sees conditions for Jews in Germany as untenable


After the anti-Semitic Terrorist attack on a Hanukkah celebration in Sydneysaid the President of the Central Council of JewsJosef Schuster, warned against a dangerous habituation to a very high level of anti-Semitism in Germany. “We have reached a level of habituation with anti-Semitism that is so high that political measures are often limited to protecting Jewish life,” said Schuster.

It is accepted that Jewish life is only possible under immense protective measures. This is symptom control, he said. “These conditions are untenable. Politics and civil society must work together to finally address the causes of hatred of Jews.” His vision remains that of a Jewish life without a protective shield.

Schuster hopes for a new uprising among decent people

Schuster called for more opposition and action against anti-Semitism in Germany. A new uprising of decent people is needed, he said. Schuster also said that today he had to realize that the decent people had either become significantly fewer or were sitting idle in the stands.

The 71-year-old was referring to a statement made by the then Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) and the then Central Council President Paul Spiegel after an attack on a Düsseldorf synagogue in 2000. Schröder had one at the time Revolt of the decent required.
