In 2025, hundreds of thousands of plug-in solar devices – also known as balcony power plants – will again be put into operation in Germany. According to estimates by the German Solar Industry Association, there will be around 500,000 new systems by the end of 2025. “The total number of registered plug-in solar devices in operation in Germany will rise to over 1.2 million by the end of the year,” said the industry association.
Around 413,400 balcony power plants were in operation by December 12th Federal Network Agency newly registered and put into operation. In the comparable period last year there were a similar number (around 413,800). According to the association, there will be more registrations and late registrations by the end of the year, and there will also be a relevant number of systems that are not reported. Plug-in solar devices actually have to be registered in the Federal Network Agency’s market master data register within one month of being put into operation.
The output of balcony power plants is increasing significantly
Even if about the same number of devices were installed as in 2024, their overall performance was greater. According to the Federal Solar Industry Association, the newly installed output of balcony power plants increased by around 26 percent. On average, the systems have become more efficient.
According to the association, plug-in solar devices are a sensible way to cover part of your electricity needs cost-effectively and to actively help shape the energy transition. The devices are popular because buyers can operate them themselves and the purchase costs are comparatively low.
