Because of the US annexation plans Greenland Denmark has announced an expansion of its troops on the island. “We will continue to strengthen our military presence in Greenland,” said Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen. “But we will also push within NATO for more exercises and an increased NATO presence in the Arctic.” Denmark is holding talks with its allies “about new and increased activities in 2026.”

The federal government also recently spoke out in favor of a stronger NATO presence in the Arctic. Increased activities by Russia and China can be observed in the region, said Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) on ZDF on Tuesday. “You have to deal with that,” he said. “And that can be solved easily within the NATO framework.”
