Green Party leader Katharina Dröge has Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his reaction to the US attack in Venezuela criticized. “The US deployment is contrary to international law. What prevents the Chancellor from stating this clearly?” said Dröge. The fact that Merz, after much hesitation, was ultimately only able to bring himself to say a few relativizing sentences is a big problem. “Diving is a fatal strategy in this situation, sir Merz“, says Dröge.
Merz had made clear on Saturday eveningthat he does not yet want to legally assess the US attack on Venezuela. “The legal classification of the US operation is complex. We are taking our time to do this,” he said. In principle, the principles of international law should apply in dealings between states. “No political instability must now arise in Venezuela. It is important to ensure an orderly transition to a government legitimized by elections.”
SPDParliamentary group vice-president Siemtje Möller called on the federal government to hold US President Donald Trump accountable after the attack on Venezuela. Trump has a responsibility to enable a peaceful transition and to create the conditions for free and fair elections, Möller told the newspapers of the Funke media group. The federal government, in turn, must use its political and diplomatic influence to work towards an orderly, peaceful transition in Venezuela.
SPD leader and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil described “the events in Venezuela” as “very worrying”. Maduro led an authoritarian regime, he said. However, “this cannot be a justification for disregarding international law.”
