The British government has appointed senior diplomat Christian Turner as its new ambassador to the USA appointed. Turner’s extensive experience should ensure that the relationship between the two countries “continues to thrive,” said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Turner’s predecessor Peter Mandelson was in September was deposed over revelations about his friendship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Emails between the 71-year-old Labor politician and the US financier showed “the depth and extent of Peter Mandelson’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein,” the British Foreign Office said at the time. The firing came just days before Trump’s state visit Great Britain.
Epstein was found dead in his prison cell in 2019. He was accused of abusing numerous girls and women and passing them on to celebrities. Trump denies having close ties to Epstein Photos and documents suggest the opposite. However, the president has not yet been proven to have committed any wrongdoing.
Turner, who was previously appointed as Britain’s ambassador to the UN but has not yet taken up the post, has been serving the British government for almost 30 years. Between 2009 and 2012 he was British High Commissioner in Kenya, and from December 2019 to January 2024 he held the same position in Pakistan.
