“What could it be?” I ask back.
The children guess: “Can you speak something into it? Can you screw something with it? Does it make music?”
I solve: “It’s a hairdryer.” The children go to their room disappointed.
Because my kids are too young to know what hypes are, I’m not saying that this strange object is actually much more than a hairdryer. It’s a status symbol: what you have when you care about your appearance, because that’s what everyone who cares about their appearance has.
