The former CDU leader and defense minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer is the new chairwoman of the party-affiliated Konrad Adenauer Foundation. At a general meeting she prevailed against Bundestag member Günter Krings. A spokesman for the foundation confirmed this to ZEIT.

Accordingly, Kramp-Karrenbauer received 28 votes, the CDU legal expert Krings only received 21 votes. There was one abstention.

The vote is also about the assertiveness of the Federal Chancellor and CDU chairman Friedrich Merz in his party. He had suggested Krings, chairman of the powerful North Rhine-Westphalia state group in the Union faction.
