Weather: The weather service expects the onset of winter at the turn of the year

The German Weather Service (DWD) has announced freezing temperatures of up to minus 12 degrees for the coming days. Two high pressure areas over Scotland and Ukraine ensure that cold continental air flows into the country from the east. Temperatures will drop on Friday night according to DWD expected to be between minus 1 and minus 9 degrees, in the east up to minus 12 degrees are possible locally.

The weather situation will change at the weekend. On the second Christmas Day Increasingly humid and somewhat milder air is entering the country. The center and the south will continue to benefit for the longest time from the dry continental air that has flowed in; according to the DWD, the sunshine will probably also clear up the last areas of high fog.

In the north, however, fields of high fog are increasingly spreading, and the clouds are expected to reach the center of the country on Sunday night. There could be some local drizzle. “There is a risk of black ice in places, especially in the low mountain ranges, as the temperatures there remain in the frost range,” warned the meteorologist Marco Manitta.

“A look into the new week ultimately suggests a gradual change in the weather,” said Manitta. The weather-determining high is therefore establishing itself over the North Atlantic between the British Isles and Iceland. Together with low air pressure over Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, this constellation enables polar air to penetrate into Germany. “With the cold air we also get precipitation, which can increasingly fall as snow down to low altitudes,” said the meteorologist. A “significant onset of winter” at the turn of the year is certainly possible.
