Head of the Chancellery Thorsten Frei believes it is a good idea to link the retirement age to the years of contributions. “There must undoubtedly be an individualization of the retirement age. It is actually a truism: not everyone can work the same amount of time,” said the CDU politician to the Editorial Network Germany (RND).
How long someone can do their job depends on the type of job. “There are activities where people physically or mentally reach a limit earlier that makes it difficult to continue working. Other activities – so-called experienced jobs – are generally not included,” said Frei. “And it must also make a difference at what age you started working life.”
Frei follows an idea from the economist Jens Südekum. The advisor to Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) believes that linking retirement to the years of contributions is fairer than linking it to life expectancy.
