How do we confront extreme forces in our society? With love, says the author Daniel Schreiber. A conversation about reconciliation in times of division

THE TIME: Mr. Schreiber, while taking a walk some time ago you came to a shocking realization: you have lost the ability to love the world, you write in your new book Love! A call. How did you feel that?
Daniel Schreiber: I took the walk shortly before the start of a writing workshop near Kassel, where I had retreated for three days with a small group. The realization you speak of came to me as I felt a weight lift from me at the prospect of withdrawing from the everyday world of news and politics in the coming days. We often don’t realize enough how stressful this everyday life is and how dark our perception of the world can become. I notice this especially when taking walks in nature.
