The chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Wolfgang Ischinger, has defended the decision to invite AfD politicians to the upcoming conference in February. The conference is a dialogue format, said Ischinger Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “Traditionally, the broadest possible spectrum of opinions, including contradictory ones, should be made clear. That is actually the DNA of the security conference.”

“By inviting AfD politicians, we are not tearing down firewalls, as some people claim,” said Ischinger. “The firewall is intended to keep the AfD away from government participation.” But the Munich meeting is not about government participation. “The parties themselves have to ensure that the AfD no longer sits in the Bundestag.”

In previous years, the then conference chairman Christoph Heusgen had neither politicians AfD invited by the BSW.
