It is Sura 19, dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. She tells how Maria gives birth to her son – and he can immediately speak. A miracle. But who is this Jesus? Quran actually and how did his path lead to Muhammad’s revelation? What role does his mother Maria play? The new episode of How was that again? embarks on a historical-theological search into the world of late antiquity, to Mecca and Medina, into the lifetime of Mohammed at the beginning of the seventh century.

Together with the Islamic theologian and religious educator Mouhanad Khorchide from Münster we explore the question of what role Christianity on the Arabian Peninsula played for the first Muslims, what Mohammed heard from Jesus and what role Jesus played in his revelation.

We discover that Christianity and Islam were not always in competition and enmity with one another, but that Mohammed sees himself and his message in a tradition with Jesus, but also with the Jewish forefathers Abraham and Moses. And we want to know what we can learn today from the fact that “Jesus, son of Mary” is a prominent figure in the Koran.
